The ‘American Gods’ opening credits are as beautiful as they are unsettling

Are you ready to begin?

We already know that Starz’s adaptation of American Gods is going to be beautiful — it hails from the creative minds of Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, and Fuller has enlisted visionary Hannibal director David Slade to helm multiple episodes.

It’s rare that a show’s opening credits can match the scope and poetry of the series itself, but American Gods pulls it off thanks to the unmistakable work of Elastic — the company responsible for all your favorite main title sequences of the past few years, from Game of Thrones, True Detective and Westworld to The Crown, Daredevil and The Night Manager.

The series imagines a different kind of war — one waged between the Old Gods of ancient religions and myths, and the New Gods of technology, media, money and drugs — and the main titles for the show offer a perfect marriage of the two.

American Gods – Main Titles

A Playback Error Has Occurred. Please Try Again.

In the credits, religious symbols like the menorah and the cross combine with the hallmarks of technological progress — power outlets and virtual reality headsets — to create an awe-inspiring totem to all the things humanity worships.

“Is it strange to want action figures from a main title sequence? Crucified astronauts, neon cowboys and S&M centaurs, we bow to Elastic and their spectacular vision. A totem of godly visions we didn’t know we needed to worship until they showed us the light with this clarion call to the American Gods,” said Fuller (Hannibal) and Green (Logan) in a statement.

American Gods premieres April 30 on Starz.
